Flying to Maroochydore: Your Gateway to Sunshine

For those travelling from interstate or overseas, flying is often the quickest and most convenient way to start your holiday. You have two main airport options, each with its own benefits.

The Closest Airport: Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY)

This is your golden ticket to convenience. The Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY) is located in the neighbouring suburb of Marcoola, just a breezy 10 to 15-minute drive from the heart of Maroochydore. You can practically smell the salt air as you step off the plane.  

The airport is well-serviced by Australia’s major domestic airlines, including Jetstar, Virgin Australia, and Qantas, with regular direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide. For our friends across the ditch, Air New Zealand also offers seasonal direct flights from Auckland.  

Getting from Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY) to Maroochydore:

Once you land, you’re just a short hop away from your accommodation. Here’s how to cover the last leg of your journey:

• Public Bus: This is the most budget-friendly option. Translink’s Route 622 bus departs hourly right from the airport and takes you directly to the Maroochydore bus station in about 18 minutes. You can pay with a Go Card or simply tap on and off with a contactless debit/credit card.  
• Shuttle Bus: Companies like Con-X-ion offer door-to-door shuttle services that you can pre-book. This is a great hassle-free option if you have a bit of luggage and want to be dropped right at your hotel.  
• Taxi & Rideshare: You’ll find a dedicated taxi rank and rideshare pick-up zone right outside the terminal. A taxi will get you to Maroochydore in about 10 minutes and typically costs between $27–$35.   
• Car Rental: If you plan on exploring the wider Sunshine Coast (and you really should!), picking up a rental car from the airport is a fantastic idea. All the major rental companies are represented here.   

Alternative Option: Flying into Brisbane Airport (BNE)

As Queensland’s major international gateway, Brisbane Airport (BNE) offers a much wider range of international and domestic flights. It’s located about 100 kilometres south of Maroochydore, but don’t let the distance deter you; there are excellent transport links to get you up the coast.  

Driving to Maroochydore: A Classic Aussie Road Trip

Driving from Brisbane

The drive from Brisbane to Maroochydore is a straight shot north and, in a perfect world, takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. You’ll head up the Bruce Highway before taking the exit for the Sunshine Motorway, which leads you right into the heart of the region.  

A Local’s Tip on Traffic: Be warned, the Bruce Highway can get notoriously congested, especially during peak hours. If you’re leaving Brisbane on a weekday, try to get on the road before 5:00 am. Any later, and you could be looking at a slow crawl that turns the trip into a 2-hour-plus journey. The drive home can be just as challenging, with traffic often building from 4:00 pm onwards. Our advice? Travel off-peak if you can, or simply embrace the journey, because the destination is worth it.  

To make a day of it, consider a scenic detour to iconic spots like Australia Zoo or the majestic Glass House Mountains along the way.  

Catching a Bus or Coach: The Relaxed & Affordable Route

If you’d rather leave the driving to someone else, long-distance coaches and local public transport are excellent, cost-effective options.

Long-Distance Coaches

Major operators like Greyhound Australia and Premier Motor Service run multiple direct services daily from the Brisbane Coach Terminal (located at Roma Street) to Maroochydore.  

• Travel Time: The journey is comfortable and direct, taking on average 1 hour and 40 minutes.  
• Cost: Fares are very reasonable, starting from around $23–$32, especially if you book in advance.  
• Amenities: These modern coaches are equipped with free Wi-Fi, USB charging ports, reclining seats, and an onboard restroom, making for a very pleasant trip.  
• Arrival: You’ll be dropped off at the central bus stop on 6th Avenue, right in the middle of Maroochydore.  

Local Buses & Train Connections

For the most budget-conscious travellers, combining Queensland Rail and Translink buses is a great choice.

Frequent trains run from Brisbane to major Sunshine Coast stations like Landsborough and Nambour. From Nambour station, you can hop on the connecting Translink bus (Route 610), which will have you in Maroochydore in about 35 minutes. With Translink’s current flat-fare structure, this can be an incredibly cheap way to travel.
